• Bang Gang: take off on "gang bang", as in what homeys do.
• In the song my name is Bud. The line my sister's name is Mary Jane and mines Bud. These are allusions to marijuana.
• Champs Elysees is a street in Paris with all the expensive stores, pubs and shit.
• Quart In Session is a take-off of "court in session" (like the American court system).
• Greediocracy is a combination of greed and democracy.
• Stranger than fishin is a rip off of Bad Religion's Stranger than fiction.
• Dying Degree is Die And Agree.

Punk Guy

"crazier then GG" is talking about GG Allin, who was pretty fucking crazy.
"more PC then Ian" is about Ian MacKaye, the guy who's credited with starting the sXe movement
"got colored teeth like Johnny" is Johnny Rotton
"exudes a Vicious disposition" is reffering to Sid Vicious from Sex Pistols
"his hair sticks out like Colins did" one of the singers from Dag nasty
"he jumps similar to Springa" Springa was the guy from SSD. He jumped.
"got a face like Charles Bronson" not sure about this one, though I think they might be talking about Charles Bronson.
Charles Bronson is this actor guy, with a narrow 4head, a mustache, and "bullet proof" hair. he was in a ton of movies. He has an unforgetable face, and voice.


My Name is Bud

The title of the song "My Name is Bud" is a takeoff of the song by PRIMUS "My name is mud" which is about drugs too !! Plus everybody knows the references.."my sisters name is Mary Jane and mine's BUD!! Mines bud!!


Drug Free America

In the song "drug free america" there is a line that goes "say nope to dope and ugh to drugs"..this is a take off on a commericial that was around in the early 80s with that fucker crime dog mcgruff..i think thats who did the commericial...anywho that was there slogan ("say nope to dope and ugh to drugs") and that what nofx was making fun of..


the Brews

A "shicksa" is kind of a nasty word meaning along the lines of a stupid girl who is good for only a one night stand, usually reffered to Irish and Polish girls.
Oh yeah and Jews are allowed to leave their house on the sabbath, they just can't work. (Lucky Us!)
Of course I doubt if any Jews still follow that rule.


Take two placebos and call me lame

A placebo is like a pill you take to compare to another pill (like a sugar pill to a valuum or somthin). So hes a saying you take two placebos and call him lame, yet you are still looking at me the same way as you did before, but you think your sight towards him has changed. So all together hes saying you see what you wanna see.

Into the song Take Two Placebos and Call Me Lame Mike talks to the persons who judge him.....he tells them to try first how does it feel living as he does (Take two placebos; walk some in my shoes) only after you do this you can judge him (then you can call me lame; and tell me to fuck off)...."my humongous hat won't fit your gigantic head" means that everybody has his personal point of view, which often doesn't fit with the other's one.....


Dying Degree

It's basically from the perspective of someone who's getting older in life and reflecting on their achievements. When they are only able to find the "coupons cut, cigarettes smoked down to the butt" they become disillusioned and feel that their life has not been very meaningful. People can get caught up in everyday expenses ("no more eating crumbs") and don't have the chance to live a really fulfilling life. Basically, these people's lives come down to simply putting off death as long as they can ("the rightful owner of one deluxe cemetary plot") and worrying about things that don't matter once you're gone (the "paisley satin lined" is a reference to a fancy, decorated coffin, which Fat Mike feels is pretty worthless once you're dead). Basically, the song is saying don't waste your life by being overly concerned with unimportant things, and make sure you have meaningful experiences to look back on later in life.


The Decline

In the Decline, when Mike talks about "one more pill to kill the pain" he's referring to the painkillers (a sort of anti-depressive pills)...which he uses, as says into an interview.....


On the cover of The Decline there is a boy flying a plane. This boy appears to be the same boy who is playing with a toy plane in the movie Pink Floyd: The Wall. Ironically, the boy and his toy plane first appear nearly 18 minutes into the movie, which also is almost the exact running time of The Decline. Play The Decline to the first 18 minutes of The Wall and you'll see what happens! I asked NOFX about this on their official website in the Q&A section, but I don't expect them to answer it (you know how those guys are). I figured instead of using lyrical puns (as they do on most albums), this time they decided to do a visual pun (which apparently makes fun of the pink floyd/wizard of oz connection).

Another interesting pun in The Decline is that when it starts talking about the unfair drug laws (Jerry spent some time in Michigan...), the time is at 4:20. 4:20 is supposed to be the time when you smoke weed, as well as being an internationally know pseudonym for marijuana.

I doubt all NOFX fans have advanced biology knowledge, so I think an explanation about the serotonin the band refers to is appropriate. Serotonin is an hormone that the body produces, and a friend of mine told me that recent studies shows that this hormone regulates suicide pulsions. I know this information isn't reliable, but I decided to write about it anyways, might always be useful. You can pretty much guess from the text(...one bullet, one empty head) that it's about suicide, but it's just nice to get a comfirmation.

IbeKento added: What that guy said about seratonin is kinda right, but heres a better explanation: Seratonin is a chemical produced by the brain. When there is a high level of Seratonin, the person feels euphoria. When there is a low level of Seratonin, the person goes through depression. Really bad depression, where they don't want to live anymore. That's why Fatty sings "The Seratonin's gone."


We threw gasoline on the fire ...

The song "We threw gasoline on the fire and now we have stumps for arms and no eyebrows" talks about NOFX themslves...they didn't wanted to be on MTV not to get burned as Green Day or Offspring "never though the furnace was gonna burn us"..... but since they became famous in someway they got burned the same "looks like we burned ourselves alive"..... In the part "remember the good old days, remember the sound" Mike paints an ideal picture of the old time, which represents how persons idealize their past... but Mike is realistic and destroys the ideal picture with that "remember the sweet Mustiness underground... I don't feel the need for reliving...some things are better off dead" .....GREAT!!!!!!

 

 

Dueling Retards

The first song of The P.M.R.C. Can Suck On This (that I have recently found in a store, lucky!!!), which is named Dueling Retards comes from the film A Quiet Week-End of Frightness or something like that where a mongol child plays his banjo quietly when some boys disturb him and he starts playing faster (this song's real name is Duel Banjo).

but Fuzz said: The Duelling Retards pun isn't quite right. It's a take on Duelling Banjos from the film Deliverance. The kid is playing the banjo and one of the guys decides to join in. Then it just gets faster cos the kid is testing the old guy.


The Malachi Crunch

The Malachi Crunch is from Happy Days when the Fonz falls in love with Pinky Tuscadero who is a demolition derby driver and who arch nemisies are the Malachi brothers, whos signature is the Malachi crunch which they injure Pinky with. Then the Fonz beets both of them and asks Pinky to marry him and then realizes he can't marry her because he needs to be his own man.


Kids From The K-Hole

Well in the song Kids Of The K-Hole, what Fat Mike talks about is where you "are" when you take a drug named special K. People who go in raves take that kind of drug. The K-hole is the name of the buzz you have when you take that drug. That's why he says 18 hours holiday and somewhere between north eden and south utopia he makes alusion to being stoned by the special K drug. Also when he says Mrs. Kitty ketamine that's because ketamine is the main chemical product used to create the drug.

and Baylowpunk added: you probably already know that but the drug special k has the active ingredient ketamine (pronounced like cat a mean) because special k is a cat tranquilized primarily used on large cats like tigers and lions.....

and Mark said: Basicaly, I've had alot of inschool suspension/detention lately, and I read Aldus Huxley's Brave New World, and in that book, they refer to 'the perfect drug' (NIN pun), soma, people would take 'half a gramme' leisurely, but when they had time, or needed to escape reality, they would take "an 18-hour holiday" probably 2 grammes of soma. While they were on this holiday, they would have the euphoria dream, like while on coke. Soma was supposedly like cocaine, but scientificaly better. It was widely accepted to go out and have and ice cream sundae with half a gramme in it, and to take a half gramme tablet when you were feeling depressed. This book was written in the 1930's and did a fairly accurate prodiction of the future.

And in the end you hear people singing "Dayenu" that's a Jewish hymn.
